Afro House
African-American Theme House, often simply called Afro House, first opened in fall 1997.
The building used to be the UC Berkeley Slavic Languages house, before the co-op bought it from the university. Some members circulated a (successful!) petition to turn it into a theme house for Black students.
Douglas Foster, the interim coordinator when the house opened, told the Daily Cal he wanted Black students to have a chance to form a tight community and share food together.[1]
